A digital world is an evolving world which is innovated by technology advances. Digitalizing the world we live in will improve quality of life. Almost anywhere we turn and look is digital (Tangient LLC,2016). We now live in a world where we can work for a company based in London, while living in Spain. From shopping to socializing, almost every part of our lives has been digitally modified (ITU, 2009). Research shows that there were approximately 12.8 million internet subscribers in Australia in June 2015 (ABS 2015). Children of this generation have been labelled ‘Digital Natives’ due to their dependence on digital technology and the internet. Students today share everything over the internet and digital technology. These students are native speakers of the digital language (Mark Prensky,2001). Teenagers use digital technology to express themselves, communicate with one another and share experiences (Laura Gallo,2013).
Through this topic, I have learned about the importance of a teacher’s knowledge on a Digital World and the influences it has on today’s society, not just at home, but also at school too. Today’s teachers should learn to communicate in the language and style of their students (Mark Prensky,2001). Teachers need to be digitally native to keep up with the demands students, parents, employers and society places on them. The world we live in today requires different skills. No longer are we working physically harder, instead we use digital advances to work smarter (Jennifer Howell,2012 p 6).
I have familiarized myself with numerous digital curation tools. By watching Youtube tutorial videos, I can now navigate around and competently use Piktochart, Pinterest, Word Press, Scoop.it and Storify. Personally, I cope in this digital world by constantly upgrading and refreshing my skills by trying different technologies and programs. In researching within this topic, I have reflected upon my own experiences and digital fluency and come to realize how much I love exploring new technologies and devices and familiarizing myself with how they operate.
